On September 24th, visit the Groton History Center at our booth at Grotonfest. We will be unveiling the recently refurbished British cannon captured by Groton’s own Captain Asa Lawerence and his men at the Battle of Chelsea Creek in 1775. The British gunboat Diana was sent to Chelsea Creek to fire on Minutemen. When she became mired in the mud and was unable to move, Lawrence’s men began shooting at the men on deck. The British abandoned ship, allowing Lawerence’s men to capture four cannons and burn the ship. Come join us and find out more about how this cannon made its way from the Diana, to Bunker Hill, to Concord, to Groton and eventually to the backyard of the Boutwell House. Groton is so lucky to have Earl Carter, local historian and craftsman extraordinaire. Mr. Carter spent many hours researching the cannon, and building a historically correct carriage for the cannon. He even built a forge to handmake the hardware. This is a unique and special part of Groton’s and America’s history. It is our extreme pleasure to bring the cannon to Grotonfest for Groton’s citizens to enjoy.
